Giant Otter

What you need to know about Giant Otters

With a maximum length of 6 feet (1.8 meters), it is the largest otter in the world and a member of the mustelid family. Only the Amazon, Orinoco, and La Plata are home to the Giant River Otter. This otter is a great swimmer who is well adapted to both terrestrial and freshwater environments thanks to its sleek body and webbed feet. The Giant River Otter inhabits slow-moving river or creek stretches, particularly those that are close to wetlands like marshes and swamps. Although this otter primarily consumes fish and crustaceans, it occasionally also catches small caimans and anacondas. They actually compete with larger adult caimans and jaguars for prey items because of their similar diets. This species, which has offspring from multiple breeding seasons, is extremely social and inhabits family groups. Burrowing into riverbanks or under downed logs, giant river otters construct dense. Additionally, they are fiercely protective of their homes, which can cover up to 12 km2 (4.6 mi2), and mark and patrol those areas.
