Marchena Island

Secluded Ocean Retreat

What you need to know about Marchena Island, Galápagos

Although it has no land visitors on this island, Marchena is a volcanic island, like the majority of the Galápagos ones. The spectacular oval caldera, which measures an astonishing 7 by 6 kilometers, is clearly visible to visitors. In actuality, this is the top of a huge subaquatic volcano. The fact that Marchena is still active while being distant from the Galapagos volcanic hotspot is what makes it so interesting.

The majority of Marchena Island is currently covered with fresh lava. As a result, the habitat of the Marchena is dry and devoid of any greenery. The terrain will eventually alter as additional pioneer plants occupy it. Though few terrestrial creatures may now dwell here.

Among the visit points on Marchena Island, there is Espejo Point, a diving and snorkeling destination. Typically, the water is clean, providing between 9 and 18 meters of decent vision. At times, the waves and currents may be fairly powerful. It’s a great place to observe and snorkel or scuba dive along with sharks, sea lions, dolphins, moray eels, and marine turtles. Search for parrotfish, damselfish, cownose rays, snappers, grunts, surgeonfish, and scorpionfish when looking for fish in the Galapagos. Mejia Point, another tourist destination for Marchena, is located on the island’s southwest shore. The Galápagos sea lions inhabit these caves and coves as their home range. Although sharks are less frequent here, divers and tourists frequently see seals, rays, eels, and many varieties of bright fish.
