Giant Tortoise

Enormous size, incredible longevity, and crucial role in the ecological history

What you need to know about Giant tortoise

Galápagos Giant Tortoise is the most iconic native species of the archipelago. There are 15 subspecies of the Galápagos Giant Tortoise, which may be found mostly on the lusher highlands of islands such as Santa Cruz, Isabela, San Cristóbal, and Espaola. If you visit the Galapagos Islands during the warm wet season, you may see them taking advantage of the circumstances at lower elevations. The Galápagos Islands are home to around 30,000 individual giant tortoises. The Galápagos Tortoise has one of the longest lifespans of any wild species, with the typical tortoise living to be 100 years old. Because of their remoteness and lack of natural predators, the tortoises were able to develop into their massive size. By chance, these gentle giants discovered the ideal location for their existence.

Interesting facts

When frightened, tortoises tuck their heads within their shells and exhale with a "hiss" sound.

The male tortoises determine who is the most dominating by seeing who can raise their heads the highest.

They can survive for months without any food or water.
