The green anaconda, one of the biggest snakes in the world, can grow to impressive proportions of more than 550 lbs (250 kg), 12 inches (30.5 cm), and over 30 feet (9.1 m) in length! Unlike many other animals, anacondas have much larger females than males. Dark olive-brown in color, green anacondas have smaller, oval spots with yellow centers along their sides and large, alternately black and white spots running down their backs. They can breathe and see their prey even when submerged in water thanks to their large heads’ perched eyes and noses. The non-venomous green anaconda belongs to the boa family of snakes. They hold onto their prey with the help of their teeth and powerful jaws. Large rodents, deer, fish, peccaries, capybaras, tapirs, turtles, birds, dogs, sheep, aquatic reptiles like caiman, and even jaguars are among the prey that green anacondas consume. They can open their jaws to swallow their prey head-first and whole, regardless of size, after asphyxiating it.
