PYGMY MARMOSET

What you need to know about Pygmy Marmosets

Pygmy marmosets prefer to live in dense rainforests with lots of cover from the elements. Each group of marmosets has a modest home range that is less than half an acre. They only eat from a select few trees. Pygmy marmosets can become prey for cats, harpy eagles, hawks, and snakes due to their small size. They hurry from one safe location to the next because of this. They can turn their head backward to look for predators thanks to the flexibility of their neck. To avoid attracting the attention of predators, they are cautious in how they move. However, pygmy marmosets are swift when they need to move and can leap a distance of several feet to escape hungry predators. Pygmy marmosets need to be able to climb in order to reach their favorite food, tree sap. With their sharp lower teeth, they scramble headfirst up and down trees and thick vines while sawing a hole in the bark or vine. They lick their tongues whenever the sap pools in the hole. In their home range, pygmy marmosets prefer particular trees and can bore up to 1,300 holes in each one. They occasionally wait around in anticipation of insects, particularly butterflies, who feed at the sap holes. The marmosets also consume some fruit and nectar.
