One of the biggest freshwater turtles in the world is the giant Amazon River turtle, also known as the arrau turtle or South American river turtle. They are primarily found in the Amazon river basins and are very aquatic. They inhabit tributaries, ponds, lagoons, flooded forests, and rivers and their tributaries. Fruits, seeds, leaves, stems, freshwater sponges, eggs, and carrion make up their diet. Each year, up to 500 turtles lay clutches containing 50 to 180 eggs on the same beaches. Every 30 female hatchlings, on average, one male turtle hatches-. Compared to other local turtles, these turtles tend to live in groups more often. They take turns cleaning each other by removing algae and other debris from each other’s shells.
