They prefer to spend their time in large, boisterous groups in forests and along rivers in tall, deciduous trees. Macaws are also lifelong partners and build their nests in the hollows of dead canopy trees from January to April. Adults who are mated can lay up to two eggs annually and spend hours preening one another and their young to remove insects from their feathers. The majority of the scarlet macaw’s food is obtained from the rainforest, including nuts, leaves, berries, and seeds. For cracking nuts and seeds, its powerful, hooked beak is ideal. It’s interesting to note that the scarlet macaw can consume fruits that are deadly to other animals. This might be as a result of the fact that they also consume a lot of clay, which is thought to neutralize plant toxins.
