The three-toed sloth is a mammal that lives in trees and can be found all over Central and South America. Three-toed refers to the creature’s three claws on each limb, and its namesake is one of the seven deadly sins (sloth). Three-toed sloths come in four different species, with two of them inhabiting the Amazon rainforest. Sloths are folivores, which means they only eat leaves, twigs, and buds. They also eat the leaves of about 30 different species of trees and lianas (woody vines). They have four-part stomachs and highly specialized gut bacteria, similar to the digestive systems of other ruminants like domestic cattle, to help in the breakdown of such tough material. Given their diet, sloths’ incredibly slow metabolism and low percentage of muscle mass in comparison to other animals are not surprising.
