Enchanting Coastal Escape
One of the firsts Islands to have interesting human history and life on it. Floreana is a Galápagos Island whose history is impressive to anyone that hears about it. Today’s Floreana is known by the popular name Juan José Flores, who served as Ecuador’s first president and was in office when his country annexed the Galapagos Islands. This place has always been an option for people to come and live on the Island since it is one of the few spots with a fresh water source. You must first fly to the Galapagos Airport on San Cristóbal Island in order to travel to Floreana Island.
Now, there is a story behind this mystery Island, a very interesting and detailed one called “The Galápagos case”. Friedrich Ritter, a German doctor, was the first to arrive on this Island along with his girlfriend Dore Strauch in 1930. Ritter is known for taking all of his teeth to live a simple, peaceful and sustainable life. Then, the Wittmer family came to the Island. They adjusted to farm life and later on, their son was born. Finally, life in Floreana became really interesting when Eloisa von Wagner Bosquet and her two lovers arrived. Their visit made conflict with the other colonists impossible to disappear. Some tragedies passed and the Wittmer’s were the only survivors of the Island and now, there is a hotel being runned by the Wittmers descendants.
In addition to history, wildlife in Floreana is also a reason visitors come to the Island. Green sea turtles often come to the coast between the months of December and May to lay their eggs on the shore of the beach. Also, in Floreana, there are a variety of animals including Blue-footed Boobies, Red-billed Tropicbirds, Egrets, Galapagos Hawks, and Galapagos Finches.
