What you need to know about Daphne Major, Galápagos

A sizable tuff cone called Daphne Major has been somewhat eroded by the sea. Because of its fragility, visitors must have a special permit. Here you can find nesting Nazca boobies, red-billed tropicbirds, and blue-footed boobies. Peter and Rosemary Grant’s famous 40-year study of evolution in Darwin’s finches, which demonstrates evolution occurring over short periods of time, was conducted primarily at Daphne Major. The island’s finches are almost all banded.

Baltra is formed from weathered lava uplifts
