North Seymour Island

Wildlife Wonderland Adventure

What you need to know about North Seymour Island, Galápagos

This Island is very popular and frequently visited because of its marine and terrestrial wildlife diversity. The Itabaca Channel is just a boat ride away from this little island. Something interesting about North Seymour Island is that the tectonic uplift of seismically moving plates under the water created the island. Visualize the flat seafloor being propelled upward and emerging above the water. Visitors may still see enormous boulders and shells that were formerly submerged in the water.

Moreover, wildlife is eye-catching for visitors. The island’s dry environment is ideal for reptiles to live in. It’s an excellent location to see the blue-footed boobies’ famed mating dance due to the enormous resident colony of these birds there. Also, one of the greatest snorkeling and diving spots in the Galapagos Islands is the region around North Seymour Island. The sea around here experiences upwelling, which causes the water to become chilly and rich in nutrients which becomes ideal for marine wildlife. Here visitors will see right next to them animals like: Marine Iguanas, Sea Lions, Reef Fish, among others.

The Island has a path visitors can go through to experience some adventure. The path goes through both the island’s interior and coastline section. The trail is level and simple, winding around a rocky outcrop through a palo santo and opuntia cactus woodland. Going inside the Island, visitors enter the biggest Frigatebird colony in the Galapagos Islands as the environment transforms to parched scrub. The magnificent and big Frigatebirds may be seen here.

Interesting facts about North Seymour Island

The name is derived from Sir Hugo Seymour, a famous and valiant official gentleman of the Royal Navy.

At first, there were no land Iguanas in North Seymour. Allan Hancock, a visiting naturalist, made the decision to relocate 70 Iguanas from nearby Baltra Island here in the 1930s.
