Bartholomew Island

Volcanic Martian Landscape

What you need to know about Bartholomew Island, Galápagos

Bartholomew (Bartolome) Island is known for its stunning landscapes rather than for its fauna like the other islands in Galápagos. Although there is not much vegetation and animals, these places are what the island makes up for. Bartholmew is one the youngest volcano formations in Galápagos. It is located at the north of Santiago’s Island which has a surface of 120 hectares.

Bartholomew´s Island is featured by the iconic view of volcanic landscapes which are very pleasing to watch. There are no habitants in this Island besides some small colonies of fauna and flora which have adapted to the dry temperature and conditions of the place. Between the months of January and March, green sea turtles come to the golden sand beach of Bartholomew to lay their eggs. But only 1% of the babies grow into adults.

Bartholomew is the most popular place to visit in Galápagos. Its unreal landscapes and panoramic views are the most photographed spots in the Island. Just off the coast of Bartholomew is the tall, pointed feature known as Pinnacle Rock. During World War II, United States pilots practiced on the rugged Bartholomew Island.  By climbing to the volcanic summits you can take a picture with the Pinnacle Rock in the background and with stunning views. In the Island there is not much wildlife or vegetation, however, you will be pleased to watch some lava lizards and other insects as well as marine life. Bartholomew is ideal for underwater activities since its wildlife will leave you amazed.
