Rábida Island

Red-Hued Coastal Beauty

What you need to know about Rábida Island, Galápagos

Rábida is most commonly known because of its sand color, red. This Island brings joy to visitor’s faces because of its fascinating surroundings. Also, it is the perfect place to photograph because of its perfect lighting. Sometimes during the first hour in the morning, the red sand becomes orange due to the sunlight striking it.

Volcanic scoria cones were the source of the initial eruptions that created Rábida. Magnesium and iron were notably abundant in the lava that was released. Iron minerals oxidize (oxidize) when exposed to air, giving off a deep red hue. The red sand that we see now is created when lava rocks dissolve over time.

A colony of Galápagos Sea Lions calls Rábida Island home. These amiable fellows like swimming with visiting divers and resting on the red beach. Also, visitors may find and look at Flamingos seeking for shrimp to eat, Green Marine Turtles, Eagle Stripes and Eels. The Island is considered a great place for snorkeling.

Rábida is a small red sanded Island. Here, visitors can take a walk around the beach, inland and up the cliffs. They may find lazy Galápagos Sea Lions laying on the beach taking some sun in. Behind the beach, pink flamingos (which are pink because of their diet) often are there with their head down seeking for food to feed in.
