South Plaza has become the Island in Galápagos to have the best vegetation. Along with this, the incredible wildlife that exists is very eye-catching. The ocean floor was lifted by volcanic activity to create South Plaza Island. In comparison to the beaches on the north shore, the cliffs in the island’s south were subject to a higher degree of elevation. The South Plaza contains a variety of ecosystems. White sand coral beaches and rocks make up the shoreline, where sea lions spend their days relaxing.

Arid thickets more suited for land iguanas and cactus woods can be found in the interior. Also, Seabirds nest on the plateau and rocky shelves of the island’s highest point, which is formed by sheer cliffs. The Galapagos Carpetweed, also known as Sesuvium, covers the whole island’s surface. The carpet is a deep green color from February through May, when it rains. But during the dry season which is from June to January, the colors transform into a vivid red or orange.

A very wide range colony of more than 1,000 Galapagos Sea Lions calls South Plaza their home. This is a purely bachelor residence where youthful adolescent aspirants mix with retired and battle-scarred male sea lions.
