Fur Seal

Rare and elusive night fisher of Galapagos

What you need to know about the Fur seal

Galápagos Fur Seals are a considerably more cautious species than the Galápagos Sea Lions, making them harder to see around as other animals are. The caverns at James Bay (Santiago) and Darwin Bay are the ideal places for visitors to find them (Genovesa). At first appearance, they can be mistaken for sea lions, but a closer look can help determine the difference. Fur seals are smaller, with bigger eyes and more hairy fur. They hunt mostly at night, where their huge eyes aid in superb night vision, allowing them to acquire food while avoiding predators like sharks.

Interesting facts

Adult males will aggressively guard their mating region, not entering the water to feed until they are near death.

Fur from the Galapagos Seal pups aren't weaned until they're about two or three years old.

In the twentieth century, they were nearly hunted to extinction for their skins.
