Galápagos Dove

Gentle cooing, striking appearance, and important contribution to the rich avian diversity

What you need to know about the Galápagos Dove

The Galápagos Dove is a bird known for its curiosity and ease to land on visitors’ body parts which makes them not shy at all. They are distinguished by their red-brown base color with some black and white patterns and hints of shimmering green, as well as their red feet and a vivid blue ring around the eye. The greatest location to search for them is on the ground, not in the air. The Galápagos Dove seldom takes to the air, preferring to stay on the ground and graze mostly on seeds and tiny fruits. They usually nest on the ground, and one of their fascinating behaviors is that if a predator gets too close, the adult bird will appear to be injured in order to entice the intruder away. Doves have been able to demonstrate some evolution on these islands. This is due to the function of pollinators. Doves have adapted, since they prefer the more dry sections of the islands where the Opuntia cactus flourishes. Because of the dearth of bees on islands such as Genovesa, the spines of the Opuntia cactus have softened through time, allowing the Galápagos Dove to pollinate the cacti as well as consume its fruit.
