What you need to know about the Galápagos Hoary Bat
The Galápagos Hoary Bat is the largest bat of two resident species in Galápagos. The Hoary Bat gets its name from its long, dense gray-brown fur that is tinged with white, giving the bat the appearance of frost, or hoar. It’s one of the most appealing bat species, because to its abundant fur coat, which gives it a “cuddly” look. Although it is recognized as the largest bat on the Island, there is not much information about this species. The Hoary bat may be found in North America, where it migrates to the south during winter. The Galápagos Hoary Bats are assumed to spend the whole year on the islands, where they feed at greater heights than the smaller Red Bats, although chasing comparable food like flies, cicadas and moths, they hunt at night using echolocation. Hoary bats do not sleep in colonies; instead, they prefer to rest alone in dense foliage, hanging upside down.
