What you need to know about the Lava lizard
The Lava Lizard on Galápagos Islands is the most common lizard and also the most friendly species on the archipelago. This Lava Lizard is 10 inches (25cm) long and usually changes colors, sometimes from gray to greens and browns. Males lizards are often larger than females and are distinguished by a crest that spans the length of their backs. One especially fascinating behavior is that of competing males protecting their territory. When two people confront one another, instead of going straight for a possibly damaging physical attack, they start performing pushups on each other. They do this to appear larger and stronger, thereby deterring the adversary. Two similarly matched males may begin fighting with tail slaps or even biting. They are mostly found in the lowlands, and are frequently observed darting among the Galápagos Marine Iguanas on the warm rocks of the beach line.
Interesting facts
Galápagos Lava Lizards may be observed all year and are most active throughout the day.
Lava lizards range in hue from mottled gray to spectacular combinations such as gold and black.
When frightened or if the temperature abruptly changes, lava lizards will frequently change color.
