What you need to know about Mobula Rays
In Galápagos, there are two varieties of Mobula Rays that are regularly seen swimming in the seas surrounding the Galápagos Islands. Manta rays may grow to be 20ft broad and 3,000lb in weight. They are highly interested in humans and enjoy interacting with scuba divers and snorkelers. Mobula rays in the Galapagos Islands can be observed bursting out of the water and landing with a startlingly loud slap. They also have the most powerful brain of almost any fish.
Interesting facts
Although these species have few natural predators, they are now classified as vulnerable owing to bycatch.
The Galápagos Islands along the coast of Ecuador host the world's greatest periodic concentrations of Giant Manta Rays.
The Devil Ray gets its name from the unusual 'horns' that sprout on either side of its broad head.
