Galápagos Mockingbirds are very known and special. Mockingbirds are known for their curiosity rather than for flying away like most birds do, they will often approach close to inspect you. The Galápagos Mockingbird, as the name indicates, mimics (or “mocks”) the cries and noises of other species. They nest in trees or cactus, but they spend most of their time on the ground, and may frequently be observed racing in and out of ground cover in search of food. The Hood mockingbird, sometimes known as the Española Mockingbird, is a notable subspecies. This bold, and at times aggressive, small bird is a skilled scavenger, and it has even been observed feasting on the blood of injured (but still alive) sea birds. Also known as the Galápagos Islands vampire. This Mockingbird is not endangered and appears to be thriving well. Nevertheless, one of the subspecies is critically endangered: the Floreana Mockingbird. This Island was the first to be settled, and as a result, the native Mockingbird was driven to extinction.
Interesting facts
It is estimated that less than 150 of this species remain, limited to two tiny islands off the coast of Floreana.
Galápagos Mockingbirds influenced Charles Darwin on his studies on species.
Some prefer to run instead of flying.
