What you need to know about Nazca Booby
Nazca Boobies also known as Masked Boobies are the biggest of the three booby species that live in the Galapagos, and it differs from its more well-known, colored-footed brethren. Their eggs are normally deposited during August and November on Genovesa Island, however on Española Island, the season stretches from November to February. The Galápagos Nazca Boobies, on the other hand, aren’t very proud of their home. Also, their nests are basically a circle of cleared ground bordered with their own guano. Female Nazca Booby are notorious for murdering their breeding mates. They usually lay two eggs, however they are laid up to nine days apart rather than together. When the second egg hatches, the older female Nazca Booby invariably pushes the new hatchling out of the nest circle, where it is neglected by the parents and dies from malnutrition, cold, or predation.
Interesting facts
Nazca Boobies may be found nesting on various Galápagos Islands, however their breeding seasons differ depending on which island they dwell on.
Although Nazca Boobies are not currently endangered, they are vulnerable to being captured in fishing gear.
The islands are home to between 15,000 and 20,000 breeding pairs of Nazca Boobies.
