What you need to know about Petrel
The Galápagos Petrels are seabirds animals native to the Islands. Galápagos Petrels are standard size seabirds with long wings, a gray-black belly, and white forehead patterns. Their legs are pink and covered with black webs. The most distinguishing feature of all petrel species is its short, hook-shaped beak with nostrils that connect at the tip. Very often, these seabirds return to the same nesting place and mate for life. Unlike other petrels that dig tunnels, Petrels have adapted to the rocky, volcanic archipelago and will frequently use natural crevices in the rocks as nests. Despite the fact that they live on the Galápagos all year, they have been observed much further away as northern South and Central America searching for their favorite prey which are usually: squid, crabs, and tiny fish. When the mating season begins in April, they can be seen in the damp highland areas of several of the Galápagos Islands, including Santa Cruz, Floreana, Santiago, San Cristobal, and Isabela.
Interesting facts
If you visit the islands through April or October, you may see them nesting inland if you take a trip to one of the highlands where they breed.
In the previous 60 years, the number of Galápagos Petrels has fallen by more than 80%.
Locals call the Galápagos Petrel patapegada, or "web-footed one."
