What you need to know about the Racer Snake
The Galápagos Racer Snake is the only venomous snake which is also a hunter on these Islands. All snakes in the Galapagos Islands are racers and are minimally poisonous constrictors. They are cautious and will retreat from humans if they are not addressed gently. These snakes catch their food by biting them and injecting venom into them, which instantly begins digesting the meal, preventing choking when the snake eats the prey whole. These thin and fast-moving snakes’ eating habits differ depending on their target. Among this prays, there are: Finches, Mockingbirds, Marine Iguanas and rats. Galápagos Racer numbers have declined in the most populous parts of the islands. The introduction of exotic animals such as feral rats, cats, and dogs has resulted in a dramatic reduction of this snake on several islands, such as Floreana. In contrast to this concerning trend, racer snake populations on Española and Fernandina Islands have increased due to their protected and secluded environments.
