Galápagos Rail is a unique and silent bird on these Islands. This endearing tiny creature is nearly flightless, with narrow wings only able to keep it aloft for a small distance. It’s mostly black, with a gray head and a few white dots on its back. It has a magnificent crimson eye that contrasts beautifully with its black plumage. Galápagos Rails are mostly known for their curiosity and lack of fear of humans. They’ll scurry out of cover to have a peek at you and your other explorers. The Galápagos Rail is classified as fragile due to the threat posed by non-native invasive species that prey on the birds’ lack of fear. Because of their inability to fly, the Rails are vulnerable to assault by feral cats, and their habitat has been threatened by animals such as goats and pigs.
