What you need to know about the Red Bat
The Galápagos Red Bat is one of the only two bat species on the islands. The Galápagos red bat is significantly smaller compared to the other native species, the Hoary Bat. It features a small, blunt head and ears, as well as a heavily furred tail membrane with brilliant orange fur on the lumbar region. The Galápagos Red Bat prefers to travel close to the surface with rapid wing beats. Red bats are most commonly found sleeping under leaves in woodlands, where they hang upside down, enveloping themselves in their wings and attempting to blend in. The Galápagos red bats, like virtually all bats, are nocturnal and use echolocation to find their prey, which is mostly flying insects like cicadas, moths, and flies. The Galapagos Islands Red Bat is a variant of the Southern Red Bat, which may be found in North and South America. Red bats move for winter in other parts of the world, similar to birds, however the Galápagos Red Bat is expected to remain resident all year.
Interesting facts

Baby Red bats cannot fly until they are 6 weeks old, thus they must be carried by their mother.
