Red Lipped Batfish is an incredible creature to keep an eye on while on your visit to Galápagos. Its name is given to them because of their big red lips. This strange fish can be observed at depths between 50 to 300 feet (15 to 100 meters) and can grow to a length of around 10 inches (25cm). Batfish prefer sandy or rubbly seabeds, and their heavily modified dorsal fins allow them to ‘walk’ over the ocean floor more easily which can be sometimes unusual for a fish. The Red-Lipped Batfish, being an angler fish, will have a fleshy growth on its head recognized as an illicium. This is used to attract prey such as small crustaceans such as shrimp, mollusks, and small fish.
