What you need to know about Sharks
Galápagos Sharks are beautiful hunters that go around the archipiélago’s ocean. At least nine shark species are indigenous or frequent visitors to the Galapagos Islands.
The Scalloped HammerHead Shark:is one of the most easily identified species in the ocean. Hammerhead sharks may be observed congregating in enormous schools of up to several hundred here, one of the few spots on the planet where this occurs. The causes behind this educational behavior are still unknown to scientists. It is defined with this name because of the “hammer” with a center dent and an arched front edge on the head. The eyes are located on the “hammer’s” edges. Hammerheads are silver-gray in hue, with a white underbelly. The brains of hammerhead sharks are the biggest of any shark species.
Silky Sharks:Silky Sharks are, as the name says, a species with extraordinarily smooth skin. They are inquisitive and are most frequently found near the surface. Divers should avoid getting too close to this species because it is not bashful. These Silky sharks hunt using both sight and hearing. They also engage in cooperative hunting, diving together into shoals of fish, each taking lightning-quick assaults and then returning for more.
Tiger Sharks: Tiger Sharks are so named because they are born with tiger-like stripe patterns. These tend to disappear as the shark ages, and are one way to determine an individual’s age. Tiger sharks have acquired the moniker “Trashcan Of The Sea” because they devour almost anything they come across with, including rubbish thrown overboard from ships or that washes up on the land. Tiger sharks love to hunt at night and feed on smaller sharks, fish, dolphins, turtles, squid, and other sea creatures. Tiger sharks are said to be harmful.
Blacktip Reef Sharks, Whitetip Reef Sharks and Dusky Sharks:These sharks are other species found in Galápagos. Available to be seen during cruises.
