Galápagos Shearwaters are a very new species on the Islands. The Galápagos Islands are home to and breeding grounds for this little black-and-white bird. They are frequently seen around the coasts of the islands where they establish breeding colonies. They frequently forage for food alongside other birds such as boobies and terns. The Galápagos Shearwaters fly extremely close to the water’s surface, beating their wings quickly and then halting to glide for a distance. The best way to detect them in flight is by their repetitive rhythm of wing beats and glides. The primary threat to these birds on the Galapagos Islands comes from non-native animals like cats and rats, which can devour both young and adults in their nest burrows.
Interesting facts
They are also threatened by animals such as goats and other grazers, which swiftly destroy the natural cover that the birds prefer to nest in.
The Galápagos National Park has made efforts to control invasive species on the islands where the Galápagos Shearwaters breed.
Both males and females share the same markings and coloring.
