Galápagos Sting Rays are known for being elegant, colorful and distinguished. Several ray species may be found in the seas surrounding the Galápagos Islands. When kayaking, snorkeling, or cruising by panga, you may frequently witness rays swimming in the clear water. Some of them are:
Golden Rays:Golden Rays are called like that because of their golden tips, but they may also be identified by their pointed head and long, whip-like ends. They may range in size from three to four feet next to wingtip to wingtip. Golden rays are frequently spotted swimming alone in the Galápagos diving spots, but they may also be spotted swimming in vast schools in peaceful, shallow lagoons. Black Turtle Cove on Santa Cruz Island is the finest site to watch schools of golden rays.
Spotted Eagle Rays: Spotted Eagle Rays own pointy heads and lengthy, spiky tails. Their most distinguishing feature is the white dots that adorn their usually black top. Spotted Eagle Rays are frequently seen in big schools in tiny lagoons like Black Turtle Cove in the Galapagos. You may also observe them when snorkeling off the shore of Floreana Island.
Stingrays: Stingrays are widespread in the Galápagos’ shallow coastal regions and sandy-bottomed depths. The long, slender tail of these grey rays terminates with a venomous sting that lends the fish its nickname. They vary greatly in size and shape, some of them can expand to have a 5ft wingspan. Stingrays are frequently found hiding on the seafloor of shallower snorkeling locations.
Interesting facts
The venom of a stingray is so toxic that even a dead stingray's tail may kill a human if not cured quickly.
Rays' bodies are boneless. Their bones are completely formed of cartilage.
These species are very close to sharks.
