SUNFISH

A massive and awe-inspiring species

What you need to know about sunfish

Sunfishes, as their name says, are sun loving giant fishes. Their name is derived from the Latin word “millstone,” which relates to their relatively spherical body form. They are a very unique species because they have an exceedingly short tail that is nearly useless. They move across the water by using their two fins. Sunfishes often feed a lot of jellyfish, crabs, squid, and tiny little fish. Sunfishes must consume a massive amount of food every day in order to maintain their size. Adult Sunfishes may grow to be 6ft (1.8m) long and weigh an incredible 2,205lb (1000kg). This fish can be encountered while doing panga or snorkel or even scuba diving in the Punta Vicente Roca or Isabela islands, all year around.

Interesting facts

Sunfishes go around from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean.

Female Sunfishes often release up to 300 million eggs each year.

These fishes are the heaviest and bony ones on Galápagos.
