Swallow-Tailed Gull

Distinctive red-rimmed eyes and elegant tail feathers

What you need to know about the Swallow-Tailed Gull

Swallow Tailed Gulls happen to be the only nocturnal gull not exclusively on the Island but in the whole world. The adults are distinguished by their black heads with a scarlet ring all over their eyes. Swallow-Tailed Gulls in the Galapagos Islands begin breeding at the age of five and lay only one egg per breeding season. Because gulls do not have a specific mating season and mate opportunistically, they can be seen nesting all year. These lovely birds eat far out at sea, close to 18 miles (30 kilometers) from land. They primarily feed on squid and small fish that swim near the water’s surface at night, especially during the initial stage of a new moon. Their incredible night vision allows each other to hunt for food so effectively in the dark.

Interesting facts

A highly vocal bird with an unusual clicking sound that is thought to be used for echolocation.

Swallow Tailed Gulls are the world's only nocturnal gull and have excellent night vision.

The best places to see this magnificent bird are on Genovesa, Plaza Sur, and Espaola Islands, where you can see between 2000 and 3000 pairs of gulls.
