What you need to know about the Yellow-crowned Night Heron
Yellow crowned Night Herons are kings of the night in the Galápagos Islands. They have distinct markings on their heads. They have white cheeks and a yellow crown that wraps around their head to their eyes and bill, with a long white feather on top of their crown. The Yellow-Crowned Night Heron stands about 2ft (60cm) taller than the Lava Heron. It is distinguished by its stocky stature and a thick neck that has become thinner when extended. This characteristic can cause its head to appear comically disproportionate to its body. It lives in the same habitat as other herons, in mangroves, swamps, and marshes. It lives near fresh and salty water, which helps it find food. Crustaceans make up a large portion of their diet, but they also enjoy eating scorpions, locusts, and other insects. They primarily catch their food at night due to the fact that this bird is most active at that time of the day.
