What you need to know about San Cristobal Island, Galápagos

San Cristóbal is one of the best islands in Galápagos to visit and this is due to not only the amazing places and spots there are to visit and do activities but to the experience the Island gives. The four substantial shield volcanoes that make up San Cristóbal Island were joined by subsequent lava flows to create a single island. San Cristóbal is one of the oldest islands in the archipelago, having formed from the sea approximately 2.4 million years ago.

Charles Darwin’s landing at San Cristóbal Galápagos on board the Beagle in 1835 was the first significant event in the region’s human history. Darwin really took his first steps toward land in the archipelago at San Cristóbal. Here, Darwin also procured the San Cristóbal Mockingbird, the first scientific specimen from the Galapagos that would later be crucial to the development of his Theory of Evolution.

The Island has a wide range of natural habitats. San Cristóbal has the most fertile and moist land, it also counts with a fresh water lake and huge green lands. The ecosystem of San Cristóbal changes as you travel farther down the coast and into coral beaches, mangrove swamps, cactus forests, and desert scrub. San Cristóbal is also one of the few inhabited Galapágos Islands. Here, tourists can stay the night, go to dinner, do many activities and enjoy every second of their visit.
